FISHING THE HONDDU
The Honddu – not to be confused with the Usk tributary with the same name – flows through Llanthony and Llanfihangel Crucorney, entering the Monnow on its right bank. This is a good little trout stream.
FISHING THE MONNOW
The Monnow, one of the larger Wye tributaries, flows down through Grosmont and Skenfrith, (past The Bell at Skenfrith’s front door) before entering the Wye at Monmouth. The Monnow rises in the upland area of the Black Mountains, but over much of its length it flows through a gentle fertile valley. Salmon can now ascend the Monnow, due to the newly installed weir at Osbaston (just above Monmouth). The Monnow is a mixed fishery, with wild brown trout and grayling as well as coarse fish.
FISHING THE USK
The Usk valley, with its backdrop of the Brecon Beacons, contains a wealth of wildlife and scenic beauty. It is also one of Wales’s finest game-fishing rivers. The river is fast-flowing and heavily wooded in its upper reaches, becoming a little more gentle and open as it passes Brecon and Crickhowell, but it is still a very lively river even at Abergavenny. Historically, the river Usk has been one Wales’s top salmon rivers. It is also famed for its wild brown trout.
FISHING THE WYE
There is some very good trout and grayling fishing on the middle Wye and some of the upper tributaries, notably the Marteg, provide lively sport for smallish but truly wild brown trout. Reservoirs in the Wye catchment provide good sport, some offering first class wild trout fishing in beautiful surroundings. On the lower Wye, coarse fishing is very good and some specimen river pike have been caught there in recent years. There are also several good stillwater coarse fisheries in the lower Wye valley.
LLANDEGFEDD RESERVOIR
Llandegfedd resevoir, between Pontypool and Usk, is one of the premier stillwater fisheries in south-east Wales; it has a fleet of boats and provides reservoir fishing within easy reach of the major towns. The waters of the 435-acre Llandegfedd Reservoir are of very high quality and the trout flourish there – as do pike, some of which grow to well over 40lb.
TALYBONT RESERVOIR
Talybont reservoir, in the Usk valley, is much favoured by the local anglers – and with good reason. Here, sedge fishing on this 318-acre lake can produce some wonderful brown trout in june and july.
