Situated in the beautiful county of Monmouthshire, The Bell at Skenfrith, a former 17th century Welsh Coaching Inn is one of Wales’s most renowned boutique hotels and restaurants. It was restored in 2001 by local residents Oliver and Boo Vaughan. In 2015, when Sarah Hudson bought the hotel, she updated it throughout.
Carefully and thoughtfully decorated, the oak beams and antique furniture, coupled with an abundance of fresh flowers and green plants, comfy contemporary sofas and chairs, all give The Bell its easy and relaxing atmosphere.
The hotel has eleven, individually designed bedrooms, all with bathrooms en suite and filled with the British perfumier Noble Isle aromatic toiletries. Beetroot grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden is used for its Fireside collection.
The hotel’s bars and restaurant have a light, airy and spacious feel. The pretty garden terrace is usually open from Spring to early Autumn. Although we do not usually reserve tables outside, guests are welcome to enquire about available tables on their arrival.
On the banks of the River Monnow, the hotel is on the outskirts of the tiny Welsh village of Skenfrith. With its award-winning Restaurant and Wine List, it is the perfect place to get away from it all for a romantic break, a special occasion, intimate wedding/anniversaries/celebrations or to discover a variety of country pursuits. There’s no need to leave your pet at home because well-behaved dogs are very welcome here!
Monmouthshire is renowned for its miles of country walks and we have created six of our own guided, Circular Walks in and around the Skenfrith area, at times crossing the border into England and back – no passport required! Budding astronomers, sky scouts and galaxy watchers should know that on a clear night, our Skenfrith Sky is never diminished by orange light!
Whatever your reason for visiting, we will always welcome you and help to make your visit a memorable one. Please note we do have free wifi but mobile signals may be a bit erratic!

One thing we are not short of at The Bell at Skenfrith is outside space. We are surrounded by the most beautiful and unspoiled Welsh countryside. We have a large garden with a terrace for al fresco dining, a small kitchen garden with fresh herbs, vegetables and fruit. We are just beside the River Monnow where many people go for a wild swim or paddle to cool off.
Our garden has just been named as one of the top 12 beer gardens in the UK by Time Out. Of course, we do serve Champagne and many other drinks in it too!
Beyond the garden, across the footpath, is our meadow garden where you can enjoy the beautiful views down over the River Monnow. For more information on activites in the area scroll down to the bottom of this page.
